This photograph shows the Warder Public Library, located at 137 East High Street, on the southwest corner of Spring Street in Springfield, Ohio. In the late 1800s, Benjamin H. Warder commissioned the firm of Shipley, Rutan and Coolidge to construct a building for Springfield's Free Public Library. Like the Bushnell house located further east on High Street, the Warder Library was built in the Richardson Romanesque style from Ohio buff stone and trimmed with brown Worcester stone. The library featured a large reading room heated by a massive stone fireplace at one end measuring 18 feet high and 12.5 feet across. The building was dedicated in 1890 and housed the library until 1989, when the new main branch of the Clark County Public Library was opened at 201 South Fountain Avenue. The Warder building continued to be used as the Clark County (Warder) Literacy Coalition Center. Now called the Clark County Public Library, the main library moved to its new facility on Fountain Avenue in 1989. The library has five locations throughout Clark County. It also has two bookmobiles that cover 41 community stops, 7 schools, 14 daycare centers and 5 Head Start Programs. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978. Description: Reverse reads: "Kelley Fountain in the arcade." This is a photograph of the Kelly Fountain in downtown Springfield, Ohio. An unidentified man stands next to the fountain staring into the water basin. The fountain was developed in 1889, when Mayor Oliver S. Kelly wanted to construct a forty-one foot high, cast-iron fountain on the Esplanade, dedicated to the people of Springfield. The site was then renamed Fountain Square and Market Street became Fountain Avenue. The fountain was later torn down due to poor construction, but was re-built as the Esplanade fountain in 1993. Westcott House is located 1340 East High Street at the corner of Greenmount Avenue in Springfield, Ohio. The architect Frank Lloyd Wright designed this house in 1905, as commissioned by Burton J. Wescott, an automobile manufacturer with the Westcott Motor Car Company, thought the house wasn't built until 1908. The original design was characteristic of his Praire School: the horizontal lines, low-pitched roof, broad eaves, wide verandas, stuccoed walls with wood trim, trellis work and elaborate use of shrubs, creating the impression that the structure is an integral part of its setting. During the 1940s interior alterations were made, turning the house into six apartments. Renovations were completed in 2007 to restore this architectural gem to its original state. This photograph depicts an unknown man cutting steel plates at the Robbins & Myers Company in Springfield, Ohio. Robbins & Myers, Inc. was originally established in 1878 by Chandler Robbins and James Myers in Springfield, Ohio, near Dayton. The founders brought varied experiences to the business; Robbins, had been an astronomer and surveyor, and Myers had been a teacher and grocer. Robbins had invested $500 in a gray-iron foundry in 1876, and was joined two years later by Myers. The new owners changed the company name from Lever Wringer Company to The Robbins & Myers Company. The company namesakes initially manufactured castings for agricultural tools and machines, and then broadened into bicycle parts when that industry boomed at the turn of the century. In the late 1920s, they also began to make hoists, winches, and crane motors to increase efficiency on assembly lines. From the late 1800s to the early 1900s the Company's product line expanded to include castings for the motor powered fan. The growing use of electricity prompted Robbins & Myers to develop and manufacture its own line of motor powered fans, which eventually included ceiling, desk, oscillating and ventilating fans, and later acquired the well-known Hunter brand of overhead fans. During WWII, the company switched to making motors for the Norden Bombsight, which measured an aircraft's ground speed and direction for more accurate high-altitude bombing. View on Ohio Memory.
